Bold Checks Vase
Much of Scroggins' ceramic art has a wheel thrown form with sculpture added to it but with this 'Checked Vase' series she wanted to explore and focus only on the form of the vessel and its surface design. Her background in graphics informed this design with an eye to a 'retro' yet contemporary feel. The vase is wheel thrown and trimmed. Once dry it is kiln fired to cone 04 (1950f) There is now have a smooth, warm white surface onto which she draws a grid pattern in a black underglaze pencil. The quality of this line work has a straight but hand drawn quality to it that keeps its pencil look. The artist paints 5 layers of underglaze using red, ultramarine blue, turquoise, deep yellow and royal purple underglaze. This layering technique ensures a rich, deep color. Her signature 'Scroggins' is painted on the bottom. 3 layers of a clear, gloss glaze are brushed over all, inside and out and the vase is kiln fire once again but to a slightly lower temperature of cone 05(1900f).
