Coral Collage Venus Large Vase
One of a Kind
This bellied one of a kind vertical vase is both decorative and functional. It's coral-like textures and undulating lines are inspired by the enticing patterns and movement discovered during the artist's coastal adventures. Its deep repeating sections of texture are created by hand carving and detailing using both manmade and natural tools in the artist's ceramic studio. The artist throws sandy stoneware clay on the pottery wheel, alters the form and later carves and designs the pattern. Porcelain slip is added to create a white skin and then she hand textures the surface with various tools. A signature stamp is impressed into the recessed foot upon completion during the greenware stage. The piece is substantial in weight due to the necessity for thickness to achieve such texture. The first firing secures the carving and texture and then Tavill coats the interior (and the recessed foot portion) with clear glaze and delicately sprinkle portions of the exterior texture with the same clear glaze, creating a subtle glisten upon observation. The final firing takes the kiln to over 2185 degrees as the clay is fully vitrified (no longer porous).
