Sailvase with Midnight Blue Interior
Created by Jean Elton
Originally designed using a computerized vector graphics program that balanced the volume on either side of its vertical axis for stability, the pre-model for this piece was created by assembling thin laminate cross sections from which a plaster model was made. Working plaster molds were then created into which the final object is slip cast, fired once to approximately 1800 degrees F, and then hand decorated on the outside by the artist using underglazes applied with fine-tipped bottles. The inside is brushed by hand with an underglaze. Both the outside and the inside have a matte finish. The object emerges from the final firing to take the work to its final form: a lightweight yet sturdy and vitrified (holds water) vessel that can be used as an elegant vase or as a standalone, purely decorative work of ceramic art. Each piece is unique. Slight variations may occur.
