Little Bird Jar
Created by Suzanne Crane
This plump wheel thrown stoneware jar is impressed with a real botanical specimen gathered by the artist in the woods of Central Virginia. The surface has a copper celadon glaze, which runs as it fires for a watercolor effect. The clay "berries" are glazed in poppy red. The intricate pattern on the rim, base, and lid is made by pressing the pointed end of a churchkey into the leather-hard clay. This area is then finished with a red iron-oxide wash. The clay bird on the lid is hand sculpted and will vary slightly. The botanical specimens used to create the impressions will vary seasonally.
