Little Bird Jar

Ceramic Vessel

(ID: A93775)
Created by Suzanne Crane
This plump wheel thrown stoneware jar is impressed with a real botanical specimen gathered by the artist in the woods of Central Virginia. The surface has a copper celadon glaze, which runs as it fires for a watercolor effect. The clay "berries" are glazed in poppy red. The intricate pattern on the rim, base, and lid is made by pressing the pointed end of a churchkey into the leather-hard clay. This area is then finished with a red iron-oxide wash. The clay bird on the lid is hand sculpted and will vary slightly. The botanical specimens used to create the impressions will vary seasonally.

      Comments about Little Bird Jar:

The plant specimen imprinted on the jar is simply gorgeous. This makes each jar truly unique. The colors are soft, yet the red berries draw the eye to a deeper examination of life as you walk through the forest while examining the jar. The pattern on the lid, rim, and base flow around the jar in intricately patterned waves. Beautiful detail.
