A sculptural stoneware vessel. This piece is hand built with a white stoneware clay body using a variation of the coil technique. Once the form is mostly constructed the face is created by pushing out from the inside and in from the outside. Once the form has dried to the leather hard state the surface is smoothed and coated with black slip, a thick liquid clay. When dry enough to handle the lines and patterns are created by carving through the slip coating revealing the contrasting clay, a technique know as sgrafitto.
