Ceramic Wall Sculpture
Created by Gail McCarthy
An abstract offering of powerfully outlined gold, white, blue, ruby and green lusters, and original work in relief with glowing "eyes" of magenta and royal blue. Each segment has its own character, blended into a compositional whole by the heavy encrusted black outlines. The techniques used for this piece date back to the 13th Century, when gold luster was valued by Persian Caliphs as equal to gold itself. This work was put through a series of glazing and firings to achieve the luminous depth and relief character. It was formed on a single 18 x 18 tile, backed by rigid board and is hung on a simple bracket system and is impervious to sunlight.
