Ceramic Wall Sculpture
Created by Rod Hemming
Inspired from the high rises in city settings. This piece is made from approximately 0.5'' x 0.5'' handmade tiles. The drawing is the first part and then recreated using the same technique as a carpet is designed, each yarn tuft is represented by a tile. All the colors are counted and then the tiles are made. Every tile has an individual texture and is colored separately according to the counts taken from the drawing. The tiles are first bisque fired at cone 04 and then under glazed in three layers, clear glazed and fired at cone 05. Once all tiles are fired, then they are laid out according to the drawing. This picture contains 1,953 tiles and has a black frame that is also hand painted by the artist. Size of the picture is 23"x41.5" framed. Each piece is unique. Exact textures, colors, and patterns may vary slightly.
