Ceramic Wall Sculpture
Created by Gail McCarthy
This oval mandala painting is layered with high relief craters on a glowing gold field, the center has fiery red ovoids emerging from black, gold and off-white counterpoints of rings. The techniques used to create this original piece date back to the 13th century when gold lusters were prized by Persian Caliphs as equal to gold itself. This work has been put through a series of complex glazings and reduction firings to achieve its depth and rich luminous presence. The painting is composed on a single 18 x 18 inch tile, backed with rigid board. It is easily hung on a bracket system to any wall, and is impervious to sunlight .
