Sponge Plants

Ceramic Wall Sculpture

Created by Phyllis Pacin
Raku fired hand-textured tile wall sculpture. "Sponge Plants" is made of parallelogram-shaped tiles that Pacin rolled by hand. Before she cut large slabs of clay into individual tiles, she textured the slabs with many different objects including a meat tenderizer, chrome trim from a car (Kammback) and a printed circuit board. Like snowflakes, no two tiles are alike. The raku firing process creates iridescent luster glazes and velvety blacks to highlight the colorful glazes. The glazes were applied with small sponges rather than brushed. The colors are purples, blues, copper lustre, beiges.
