If you turn a cathead basket upside down, you will see the cat's ears. If it were a functional basket meant to carry a lot of weight, the shape of the base would help to distribute the weight out to the sides of the basket. In this piece, it's a shape that makes the basket more graceful and aesthetically pleasing. The archival plastic film, woven with the painted cotton paper, allows the inside metallic colors to shine through, giving them visual significance.
