African Burial Ground II

Fiber Wall Hanging

Created by Valerie Goodwin
For the artist, maps are intriguing as an art form and as a vehicle for artistic expression. They are personal explorations of map language and imagined landscapes. Most of her pieces are not consciously based on a specific place. However the story of the African Burial Ground, a real place, served as the inspiration for this particular work. The previously forgotten and hidden life of African slaves living In lower Manhattan during colonial times spoke to her as a vehicle for artistic examination.
