Thread Foglio II

Glass Vessel

Created by David Patchen
Crisp details and vibrant colors are hallmarks of Patchen's work - the result of his technical and creative mastery.

This spectacular blown glass vessel from the artist's Foglio series is created using the challenging murrini technique. Patchen uses both hot and cold glassworking processes to create hundreds of highly-patterned glass tiles, composes them into a mosaic, then fuses them together and begins the blowing process. This unique piece features a wide range of colorful murrini made over many weeks, including some that glow in the dark (see photo).

By switching the pattern from one blowpipe to another during the glassblowing process while the glass was hot, Patchen created the 'vanishing point' design on each side of this Foglio. This sizable sculpture has great presence and a sleek, flattened profile. It is double-encased in clear glass for depth, optics, and stability.
