Jacquie Rice and Uosis Juodvalkis

Gild the Lily

"We are makers of garments that use a multiplicity of fabrics and leather. We care about fit and forgiveness. We want women to feel their spirits lift while wearing our garments. "

Creators Jacquie and Uosis do all the designing and work for their small boutique label. They let caprice rule, selecting found ribbons, feathers, furs, metallics, and trims for their fun and flirty pieces. They pride themselves on making one-of-a-kind pieces that possess stylish sangfroid.

Each piece is constructed individually; handcrafting techniques such as shibori dyeing and pleating are used to further enhance the fabrics. The designers use a variety of surface treatments on silk chiffon, organza, linen, boiled wool, and microfiber. Sometimes, digital printing is used. Uosis forms the garment patterns after lengthy prototyping, while samples are sewn and tested by Jacquie.

Jacquie has been sewing since she was eight years old and still has her first sewing machine (archived, of course). As an artist who taught at the Rhode Island School of Design for nearly thirty years, she has had great exposure to all kinds of art. Uosis is a photographer, woodworker, and jeweler who has embraced both historic and modern technologies.
