Souda

Mixed-Media Sculpture

Created by Jackie Abrams
This piece is from Abrams' "Women Forms" series, a series of woven vessels that speak of women, their shared stories, and their layers of experience. It is a continuing study of form, color, and surface textures. Each vessel tells the story of the woman it embodies. The outside, with its decorated, sometimes rough surface, has been formed and shaped by society and the woman's life experiences. The inside, which catches the light in unexpected ways, reflects her inner strengths. These strengths are not always visible, and may require careful looking.

"Souda" translates to "black feminine" in Arabic. She is woven of painted cotton paper and wire, covered with black mica sand in its natural color, with a collar of beads.
