Standing in Strength
Mixed-Media Sculpture
Created by
Jackie Abrams
Standing in Strength is from the artist's Women Forms series, woven vessels that speak of women, their shared stories, and their layers of experience. Each vessel tells a story. The outside, with its decorated, sometimes rough surface, has been formed and shaped by society and the woman's life experiences. The inside, which catches the light in unexpected ways, reflects her inner strengths, strengths that are not always visible, which may require careful looking. The women in Standing in Strength stand together in the company of other women, daughters, sisters, mothers, friends. It acknowledges the power of women, of all shapes and sizes, standing together. They won the 2019 Merit Award at the International Fiber Arts exhibit in Sebastopol, CA. The size given is for the tallest piece, on the left. The heights range from 5 to 10." They are woven of cotton and rice papers, acrylic paint and mediums, encaustic, wax, copper foil, wire, buttons, waxed linen thread, with various surface techniques.
