Mixed-Media Wall Art
One of a Kind
The Balcony is a mixed media painting on gallery-wrapped canvas. The artist combined oil and alkyd paint and cold wax medium with charcoal and pastel to create it. The painting is quite textured as the wax medium builds thickness and luminosity. This creates a stunning contrast to the opaque charcoal and pastel. A pastel painter since graduating art school, Fagan has always wanted her paintings to speak as fluently as her pastels. After a residency in France two years ago, she began combining charcoal, pastel and paint. In this piece, she has used both thin glazes and heavier palette knife applications of paint. Between the paint layers, she drew with charcoal and pastel. The dry media are fused with the paint, so no charcoal or pastel remains on the surface. The finished painting is varnished with an eggshell finish and may be hung without glass. Imagery is painted around the edge of the deep gallery-wrap stretchers. It is wired to hang unframed.
