Betty Green

"In my paintings, I seek to create excitement and beauty on a tactile and emotional level. I allow the art to flow from my imagination using intuition to guide the journey. I hope viewers can enter my artwork and make their own discoveries and connections."

In her mixed-media paintings, Betty Green aims to create a visceral suggestion of land, sea, and sky through painterly abstraction. She carefully applies layers of paint and textural materials on the canvas, arriving at a subtle balance that is both dynamic and vibrant. Green is fascinated by the challenge of playing with color, movement, and emotional content to arrive at the finished creation.

Green's technique involves building up layers of acrylic paint, emulsions, and unusual collaged materials. These materials include found objects such as bubble wrap, scraps of patterned paper, twigs, and metal hardware. Elements are scratched, torn, covered, and partially revealed again as ghost images. This constant interplay ends in a resolution that is rich and harmonious on many levels.

Betty Green's work has been exhibited widely in museums and galleries in California. Green attended Cornell University and received her BFA from UCLA, where she studied painting under the tutelage of renowned artists Richard Diebenkorn and Tony Berlant. Her design background as an Emmy-winning Main Title Designer has had a major influence on her distinctive mixed-media paintings.
