Gershwin Series: An American in Paris
Created by Marion Kahn
This 36" x 36" oil painting was motivated by George Gershwin's jazz-orchestral composition, "An American in Paris." Gershwin was fascinated by the taxi horns and all the sights of Paris. You will find many iconic images within this colorful painting, including the view from clocktower window at the (then) Gare d'Orsay, now Musee d'Orsay. You can see part of the Louvre and Sacre Coeur de Montmartre. Music floats out the apartment at the top left with the Mansard roof. You hear the ephemeral voice of shopkeepers and bakery workers addressing you as you enter their establishment with a sing-song question, "Madame?" Gershwin's happy, complex music inspired this joyful painting. On gallery-wrapped canvas with painted sides.
