I bought these because I am always looking for unique hippo items for my best friend who collects hippos. The overall idea is unique. But I have to say that I was surprised that the hippo itself appeared to be nothing more than a cheap vending machine toy stuck on a beautiful silver sculpture. I did not expect it to be rubber. If the hippo WAS handcrafted, I apologize for my comments, but that is how it appeared. The rubber however does keep the earring lightweight. Overall the earrings are much larger than I expected too. My friend commented that she "would never wear" them due to the large size but she would not take me up on my offer to return them for something else. She wanted to keep them for her collection, but I was disappointed that they would not be used for their intended purpose. I would have returned them if I had bought them for myself.

If you're one who doesn't care for a lot of attention, don't buy these little hippos. Oh, my! I've had so many compliments and so many "where did you get them?" questions. They are most comfortable on the ear - very light. The ear wire is a nice size. I'm tryng to decide on my next pair. If you want to smile all day, you'll love these!

So far, I have the zebras, giraffes, and now the hippos. I am well on my way to collecting an entire zoo full of earrings! I love to mix and match them. Friends always look twice and then inevitably, break out in big smiles. Can't wait to treat myself to another critter.
