Wood Console Table
This piece began as an exploration of sculpted elliptical shapes but began to take on characteristics of the bird whose name it was subsequently given. Ebonized, elliptical tiger maple creates subtle textured and "feathered" appearance of top surface. It is finished with a durable protective varnish. The top connects to split-sided, hand-sculpted black walnut base with blackwood pegs at points of exposed joinery. The shape of top is echoed in negative space of the uprights and angled ends of horizontal stretcher. Mortised rail at floor connects the two halves of each side allowing wood movement into the gap between as well as serving as feet.
