Night Tables

Wood End Table

Created by Jeffrey Hills
The materials in this piece are quarter sawn Walnut, Brazilian Cherry, Padauk and Tiger Maple. Night Stands have two components, an upper box and a lower leg section. The upper box is constructed of quarter-sawn Walnut and its mated drawer in Tiger Maple and Brazilian Cherry. The legs are constructed of Walnut with Padauk sandwiched in the middle, rising into an arc of Padauk with Walnut upper and lower cross members. The square buttons are made of Wenge. The case is matched grain Walnut with all hand cut Dove Tails on the case and drawers. It was essential for the appearance as well as the operation of the drawer that this joint came together precisely square and true for its entire length. The drawer sides are a fixed to the front with zero entry dovetails.

The dynamics of wood movement have been accounted for and should not impede the slide of the drawer. Behind the drawer is a bow of wood, which acts as the drawer stop. Each rear side of the drawer has a felt tip. Each handle was hand carved and sanded and is joined to the drawer with two 1/8th inch dowels and glue. The legs are each joined by the arch placed in the leg dado. The front and back components are joined by mortise & tenon joinery.

The upper box supports are screwed in and then a square is chiseled and a square peg is fashioned. Upper and lower components are joined by four dowels and glue in the center third only, in order to allow for seasonal movement.

The Night Stands are finished in five coats of Tung Oil and the sides of the drawers are finished in Tung Oil and Wax.

Care Instructions:
A high quality furniture oil with UV protection is recommended for the base and top periodically.
