Pangaea Wall Sculpture

Wood Platter

Created by Keoni Carlson
Pangaea is a unique wall sculpture carved from maple, turquoise, and Australian burl.

Inspiration for the artwork comes from creation stories that are part of First People and native cultures worldwide. Pangaea is the name given to the landmass that combined all present-day continents into one some 335 million years ago. In this contemporary interpretation, the artist depicts the glimmer of a High Desert Plains morning sunrise reflecting off mountain peaks the upper world. This is underpinned by swirling, stylized water and waves the under world. The passageway between the two realms is a river of inlaid turquoise coursing through a flame-burnt, 3" Australian burl.

A block of sugar maple is spun on a lathe and turned to create the canvas. Spokes and rings are then individually carved. Following a resting period, the wood moisture content is stabilized at 7000' altitude at the artist's Colorado mountain home. Once seasoned, the artwork is moved from the wood shop to the finishing studio, where the design is burned onto the wood using 1/8" straight lines then colored with hand-applied India inks.

Not food or microwave safe; hand dust. Best if kept out of direct sunlight.
