Sculptural Form of Buckeye Burl II
Created by Eric Reeves
This shallow bowl functions as a sculptural form when mounted on a stand, which is included with purchase. The piece gives a sense of buckeye burl at its best, as if an entire universe of figure had somehow managed to be inscribed on the outside of this hollow form. Buckeye burl is particularly interesting in its figure because as a root burl growing underground, figure does not emerge until the wood is brought above ground, where it quickly oxidizes minerals it has absorbed while growing. The figure rapidly becomes stable, although patience is required for the wood to season properly. The natural contours of the wood, as harvested, have been preserved in this turning. It has been sealed, then finished with Danish oil and a beeswax and carnauba combination.
