When the pieces are dry they are painted with gesso on all sides to seal the paper. Fired and patina copper is adhered to the paper and a joint compound mixture is spread on the bottom 2\/3 of the piece below the metal to form the cracked surface. After the surface dries, it is carefully sanded and the top 1\/4 of the Joint compound is stained with a thin wash of black paint. \u003cspan class=\"glossaryLink\" data-glossary-word=\"Encaustic\"\u003eEncaustic\u003c\/span\u003e is worked over the cement to create a deep rich cracked surface. The top 1\/3 is troweled and texture with joint compound, sanded and sponge painted three times with a variety of rust and golden colors. This set of work weighs about 10 lbs in total. The pieces are wired and ready to hang.
