Fired and \u003cspan class=\"glossaryLink\" data-glossary-word=\"patina\"\u003epatinated\u003c\/span\u003e copper is adhered to the paper and a cement mixture is spread on the bottom 2\/3 of the piece, below the metal to form the cracked surface. After the cement dries it is carefully sanded and the top 1\/4 of the cement is stained with a thin wash of black paint. \u003cspan class=\"glossaryLink\" data-glossary-word=\"Encaustic\"\u003eEncaustic\u003c\/span\u003e is worked over the cement to create a deep rich cracked surface. The top 1\/3 is troweled and texture with joint compound, sanded and sponge painted 3 times with a variety of rust and golden colors. The use of handmade paper for the canvas of the piece gives an organic feel to the piece and the added benefit of keeping the work very light for hanging. The pieces are wired and hung without a frame. This set of work would weight about 8 lbs in total.
