Ariel’s mother taught her to sew at the age of eight and she never stopped. Not wholly happy unless creating something, she has applied her skills in multiple ways; making dolls, costumes and sets for theatre and dance, quilts and framed fiber wall pieces, and perhaps most notably, one-of-a-kind and limited edition clothing. It was while working as in-house designer for the legendary wearable art gallery, Obiko, (in the ’80’s and 90’s) that her love for fabrics found around the world was nurtured. Inspired by, among other things, the geometric piecing of Korean wrapper cloths, the ragged edged patchwork and idiosyncratic hand stitching of Japanese Boro, and the intoxicating patterns used in African raffia skirt panels, her work is imbued with the essence of the textiles that move her so profoundly.
Over the past few years Ariel's creative interests have wandered from the wearable into the design of home interiors. Working in a furniture showroom and helping people feather their nests has become a most gratifying occupation, and her love of worldly textiles now inspires her one-of-a kind pillows; art for your home to wear! Using the same techniques as her dress making employs, her home wear is often pieced or appliquéd, with great attention to pattern and detailed stitching. One of her signatures is the use of the closing zipper as a design element, moving it away from the edge that always wants hiding, resulting in a reversible pillow that can be placed any which way up without that pesky zip dictating the bottom!
A refreshed assortment of pillows, whether new or simply rotated every once in a while, is an easy uplift, making any room feel surprisingly new and reinvigorated. They are the cherry on the top of any room decor, the perfect jewelry for any outfit, adding a final touch that can “pull it all together” like magic.
