The base is Canarywood [Centrolobium spp., family Leguminosae]. Canarywood is a colorful turning wood from Tropical America, with a broad palette of its own, including a dramatic yellow, which gives the wood its name. There are also many hues of red and brown and a swirling grain the creates dramatic mixtures. The crown to the vessel is Maidou Burl from Vietnam. It has truly fantastic figure and is one of the great turning woods of the world. It has, unfortunately become very difficult to obtain. The finial was turned from Kingwood, a member of the Tropical American Rosewood family. It also is highly dramatic in color and figure. The turning was finely sanded and sealed; after sealing, Danish oil was rubbed into the wood, followed by hand-rubbing with a combination of carnauba and beeswax in a light solvent. This finish has a very light and transparent quality.
