Sterrett has received numerous awards. Trained as a fine artist, she earned a BFA from the Rhode Island School of Design and an MFA in painting from Yale, and she studied for a time with Oskar Kokoschka in Salzburg. She is retired from the faculty of Pratt Institute in New York City.
