Jon Michael Route
Jon Michael Route Studio
For Jon Michael Route, art is not just about having technical knowledge of the material (for example, understanding the malleability or tensile strength of an alloy); it is also about the physical relationship and personal affinity the artist develops with the material.
Jon Michael Route enjoys the directness of the hot patina process. The metal has to be within a specific temperature window for the patina to take effect. With a large, flaming torch in one hand and a sponge or a brush in the other, Route has to pay close attention to subtle temperature changes. He uses several different metals to take advantage of their physical characteristics and complementary colors.
With an M.F.A. in metalsmithing, work experience as a bench jeweler and metal tradesman, two stints as an adjunct professor, and nearly 30 years as an independent metal studio artist, it is obvious that Jon Micheal Route is passionate about art and metal. He regularly exhibits at some of the most prestigious art and craft shows around the US and is a four-time past juror for the American Craft Council.
