Katie Carder Fine Jewelry
Katie Carder, designer and maker of Katie Carder Fine Jewelry Jewelry, is inspired by the natural world surrounding her. One of her favorite pastimes is taking walks around Chicago, photographing and sketching interesting plants and flowers. From her sketches, photographs, and studies, she creates delicate pieces of wearable botanical art. This collection is a fun and modern series hand fabricated from sterling silver and accented with freshwater pearls and natural gemstones for a touch of color and elegance.
All of Carder's jewelry is hand fabricated, beginning as a flat sheet of metal or piece of wire. She hand cuts each shape with a jeweler's saw and creates each piece with techniques such as chasing and repousse, hammering, dapping, and soldering. She also enjoys incorporating plastic flower parts dissected from artificial flowers and plants. This adds a fun and dynamic aspect to her work and allows her to play and create her own specimens of biology and botany
Carder received her bachelor's in fine arts with a focus in metalsmithing and jewelry design from Indiana University, Bloomington, in December of 2006. Since graduating she has designed and produced for a few established jewelry artists participated in many workshops and classes to further her technique; had her work shown at SOFA, New York; and has successfully established Katie Carder Fine Jewelry.
