JC Squared

"Consider the notion that the you are the first person after the maker to use the object whether it be a drinking glass, a serving bowl or even a pair of earrings. We have a hard time saying that with most of the food we eat much less the items we purchase and use."

JC Squared was born from the artists' need to share their practice with a greater practical and accessible audience. Jennifer and Jason have become accustomed to collaborating on high-end, narrative-driven glass sculpture. The completed pieces often include imagery that references the sea or pulls from nature, including flora and bee life. Using the full spectrum of glass techniques and inherently aligned influences, JC Squared creates finished works that a broad demographic can own and enjoy.

Within the compositions, Jennifer includes components made using a torch that represent her mastery of the process, while Jason?s contribution includes cast and blown glass. Much of the items represented in the JC Squared line are equally weighted in functional ability, design, and beauty. Jennifer uses borosilicate glass to create her solid flameworked sculptures. Jason combines hand-blown and sculpted glass forms with cast components.

Jennifer Caldwell a.k.a. Umphress was born and raised in California. She began working with glass in 2000 while living in Hawaii. Working in a glass gallery and studio, she adapted flameworking techniques to recreate regional sea life. She spent a month training in Murano under an Italian Master. She gained additional training in workshops at Pilchuck Glass School, Corning, and Pratt Center for the Arts. She has maintained a full-time glass studio practice for nearly 20 years. Full-time artist Jason Chakravarty began incorporating neon glass into his sculpture in 1998 while attending Arizona State University. He was employed for four years at a sign shop where he learned technical fundamentals of the neon process. In 2002, he began illuminating blown-glass forms and kiln-cast glass while attending graduate school at California State University, Fullerton. He has taken workshops at Pilchuck, Pittsburgh Glass Center, Penland School of Crafts, and University of California, San Diego.
