Alan Powell

Alan Powell Design

"Whether it is in furniture or architectural design, I strive to achieve simplicity and directness of vision by peeling back layers to obtain a pure form."

Alan references geometry and proportional relationships in architecture to help direct his design decisions. Currently, he is researching geology to better see what lies within the earth. These stories from both the earth and architecture always been part of his work.

Responding to color, texture, and grain and utilizing specific Chinese joinery techniques, Alan Powell has created generational pieces of furniture. No solutions are ignored, but his relied-upon methods often go back to the English Arts and Crafts Movement. Quality of fabrication and crispness of detail are his foremost concern.

Beginning in antique restoration, Alan Powell then began operating his design studio in 1981 and continues today. Extensive workshops and a summer program with Ian Kirby Studio gave guidance to his early work, while working closely with architectural firms and interior designers gave more depth to his designs. Alan Powell's most influential moments are through travel and extensive study.
