Nancy Raasch

"I am passionate for paper! I love ALL aspects of paper, and I push its boundaries in the fabrication of my paper-based jewelry."

Nancy Raasch designs and crafts her jewelry using hand-felted mulberry paper (joomchi) along with materials such as paper mache, scraps of corrugated cardboard, green packing material, handmade paper, and bits of wire. She renders these materials into unexpected creative wear. Each piece is unique and is the clash of the mundane and precious.

Raasch loves to get her hands wet making paper in the traditional Korean craft of joomchi, a hand-felting process in which separate pieces of mulberry paper are joined together using only water and agitation. This felted paper is fashioned into wearable art that is sturdy and water resistant.

Nancy Raasch was a graphic designer for more than thirty five years. She specialized in print design, and paper was a important part of the design process. She has studied at Penland School of Crafts, Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts, John C. Campbell Folk School, and the ArtsCenter of Carrboro, NC.
