Christopher GryderIn order to encourage this union of substance and shape, Christopher Gryder has developed a new sand-casting technique--"earth forming"--that allows him to shape his material by carving its negative form. Once the cavity is filled with clay, he releases the actual piece by destroying the surrounding silt mold.
The process creates a ceramic illusion, passing off man-made objects as though they were formed in the natural world. A deliberate artifice that replaces the artist's investment of time and labor with the casual motions of Mother Nature.
