"My paintings evolve from a certain introspection, coming out of an awareness or sense. There is an aspiration to the holy moment so to speak, the desire to delve deeply into the realm of feeling, or essence."
Heidi Daub has created a style that is personal, idiomatic, and singularly hers. She has assimilated the characteristics of Modernism so completely to her own artistic purposes, she seems to have come to it naturally. Nature is always her starting point, always her vehicle for expressing and shaping her visions. Her ability to translate personal experiences, thoughts, and feelings into artful images that are at once rich in poetic associations and probing in enigmatic content are what make her paintings memorable and worth seeking out.
Daub works primarily in acrylics, both on paper, and wood panels. Her work is rich in color, hues emanating from multiple layers of paint. Often a color is brought out from underneath by way of scratching, drawing, or scraping the top layer. Beginning with a thought or feeling, there is an attempt to open herself to allow the painting to evolve without a preconceived structure. She often writes as she paints, and the writing often informs the painting.
Heidi Daub grew up in the hill and valley region of Binghamton, N.Y., and graduated in Painting and Drawing,1982, from Montserrat College of Art, in Beverly, MA. As well as her visual work, she has been involved with traditional music, and writers groups in both Vermont and Maine. Daub has lived and worked in Blue Hill, Maine since 1984, and has exhibited her paintings widely throughout New England since 1987.
