Born and raised in the Deep South, Kathleen Holmes incorporates the traditions of her upbringing in her mixed-media paintings. The sky-dominated landscape, rich tonalities of rusted metal, and intricate patterns and textures of crocheted textiles, all pay tribute to her cultural and visual heritage.
Holmes creates a complex combination of objects and images in her compositions. The painted elements with their luminous oil glazes produce an impression of a three-dimensional realm. The mixed-media applications conversely remind the viewer that paintings are two-dimensional.
