Belle Brooke Barer

"I work to break boundaries. I seek to mix contrasting ideas and to manifest a harmony between them, to make them one. I am inspired by two opposing forces, the natural and the manmade. One can never truly be the other, only in principle and design."

Successfully maintaining a balance between opposing forces and energies, the yin and the yang, fosters harmony among all things. Jewelry artist Belle Brooke Barer seeks to visually manifest this theory through her use of contrasts—black and white, empty and full, open and closed. Each form, though seemingly asymmetrical, achieves balance and visual harmony.

Each of Barer's pieces is made by hand and no two are the same. Beginning with raw materials—silver, gold, and stones—the artist brings each piece to life using saws, files, hammers, and heat. The metal is oxidized to create contrast, then sanded and finished. After the stones have been set, they are polished to a perfect mirror shine.
