Ian Petrie
"I create decorated handmade pottery that is equally at home on the wall or on the table. Often featuring highly-detailed illustrations and comics of my own design, a single plate functions as a narrative prompt that one can ponder while also using it to eat their favorite meal."
Ian's current body of work is made by taking a drawing and fracturing it into many small pieces, to then be scattered on the surface of a mug.
Ian M Petrie begins by drawing original illustrations and comics, often depicting mundane, everyday scenes and stories. These images are then processed and screenprinted using a unique ceramic ink able to withstand the extreme temperatures of the pottery kiln. Finally, Ian transfers the prints onto handbuilt pottery which is glazed and sealed beneath a food-safe, clear glaze.
Originally from Minnesota's St Croix valley, Ian M Petrie grew up surrounded by utilitarian pottery. During his studies at the University of Minnesota (BFA, 2013), he became enamored with decorating his handbuilt pottery with illustrations inspired by comics and manga. During two Emerging Artist residency programs Ian learned to use screenprinting realize this long-time goal.
