K. Velis Turan

"I see the world in light, shadow, and graphic forms. I strive to capture the essence in my work by using colors and textures of fiber, but my pieces are not complete until I add my "threadstrokes."

Looking at the world's graphic elements, Velis Turan translates them by drawing onto fabric using a variety of surface design techniques. Her work is a process from seeing to drawing to printing--and then adding the details to make her vision complete.

The backbone of each piece is the artist's own version of screenprinting with dyes to first capture the images. Then Velis Turan paints into the images and embellishes each piece using free motion machine quilting so that the work has texture and depth. The finished pieces are prepared for hanging using external or internal frames.

Velis Turan has a background as an illustrator and graphic designer. She is a member of the Surface Design Association, The Textile Study Group of New York and is a professional artist member of Studio Art Quilters Associates. Her was has been exhibited nationally, internationally and published in magazines, catalogs and books.
