Lou Ann Townsend and Mary Filapek

Mary and Lou Ann

"Our jewelry is about dreams. When we dissect our dreams, we find that they are not ruled by gravity, but rather exist in a state of grace. We aspire to bring a sense of grace and anti-gravity to all of our work. We continue to explore the concept of the void in our dreams and in our work. The void can be found in the space between atoms or breaths--moments of complete pause that hold nothing and everything."

Lou Ann Townsend and Mary Filapek share a design sensibility heavily influenced by a mid-century modern aesthetic. Crisp, strong lines, clean color, and a relationship to the universe and its machinations are infused throughout with a sense of joy and hope.

The creation of their work always begins with the metal. The artists work collaboratively to design and produce pieces from sterling silver, gold, or bronze, utilizing both fabrication and casting techniques. After the metal work is complete, pieces are often embellished with colorful polymer clay or semi-precious stones.

Lou Ann Townsend and Mary Filapek met at the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque where they were both studying metal arts. They currently live in North Carolina and have been collaborating for over 15 years.

The artists' work appears in the following books published by Lark Books: Masters: Polymer Clay: Major Works by Leading Artists; 1,000 Rings: Inspiring Adornments for the Hand; and 400 Polymer Clay Designs: A Collection of Dynamic and Colorful Contemporary Work.
