Scott Slagerman

"My recent work has been to combine glass with other materials such as water, wood, porcelain, and cement in new ways. Using innovative techniques along with traditional craftsmanship, I have been able to connect these materials and allow us to see them together in ways not seen previously. The result is fresh and brings out their inherent qualities in a powerful way!"

It is refreshing to see something completely new: we have all seen a lot of objects and artwork, and Slagerman's work is different. Slagerman brings wood and glass together by blowing the glass directly into the finished piece of wood. He does not overwork his objects; instead, he lets the materials do the work. The result is pieces that almost appear to have happened organically in nature.

Slagerman uses live edge wood from artisanal wood mills around California and hand blows each piece of glass used. He then cuts the shapes in the wood, often using the grains of the wood as his guide. After the shapes have been cut, the wood is brought into the glass studio, and using special techniques that he developed, he blows the glass directly into the wood itself.

Slagerman is a classically trained master glassblower. He was fortunate to be a part of the American Glass movement at an early age and was mentored by many of the internationally renowned artists of this movement. He then spent 20 years living and working in France where he was able to acquire new techniques and a solid formation in the arts.
