Art Glass Platter

The Glass Forge
The process of creating a glass object begins by gathering molten glass, which is then shaped into a round form by rotating it in a wooden cup. Colors and patterns are added, followed by more glass being gathered to achieve the required size. The gaffer chills the gather slightly before starting to inflate it into a bubble, which is then hand-shaped and repeatedly reheated in a glory hole.
Tools such as blocks, paddles, jacks, and wet newspapers help refine the shape. Additional glass may be added to create features like feet, handles, or abstract forms. This process can take up to 2 hours and may involve assistants.
Once finished, the piece is placed in a 950-degree annealing oven to cool slowly, preventing fractures. It remains in the oven overnight to reach room temperature, and only the next morning can it be touched and critiqued. Cleaning the glass is easy, as no paints are used—just a glass cleaner and towel, ensuring no color will rub off.
