Whale: Finback/Desire

Some mythologies say the whale is the whole world. It holds the abilities of creation, awareness, intuition, compassion, and is the life force in spirit and desire. A young person rides a Finback, open to distance and all that is ahead. A quote from Rumi is painted on the lower side, "The desire in your heart is for the sea. Your soul has that nature from your mother. "

The whale is made of cedar, and the figure is poplar. Each is shaped on the band saw and sander, and further carved with a rotary tool. The paint is latex enamel with some acrylic overlays, and is finished with acrylic micaceous oxide. That gives slight texture and glimmer.
