Andrea Pro expresses the essence of the native species and ecosystems of Hawaii through the art of printmaking. She spends many joyful hours hiking in remote areas, planting trees with reforestation projects, and gazing up at butterflies and birds cavorting in trees. She works from her studio at home on a lovely coffee and macadamia nut farm overlooking the ocean on the island of Hawaii. She frequently collaborates in art events with conservation organizations to raise awareness and funds to support the endangered species of Hawaii.
Andrea Pro enjoys working with a variety of printmaking techniques, from wood and linoleum block printing to the more painterly processes of collagraphs and monotypes. Her prints are known for their exquisite textural patterns created with detailed carving, and for her vivid use of color balanced with atmospheric gradations. Pro often relies on imprinting the natural grain of the wood to add another layer of subtle texture and depth to her images.
From early childhood, Pro began doodling, sewing, working with clay, and cooking. Any activity involving creating with her hands fascinated her. She found her life's work by participating in a local woodcut workshop in 1997. She honed her skill in the art of printmaking through several years of apprentice-style training with a master printmaker, along with participating in many workshops with noted printmakers.
