Wooden Sculpture

(ID: A664)
Created by Dona Dalton
This is a sculpture created in an mindset of possibility, during a time of anticipating change.

Dalton has included the poem " Oceans", by J.R. Ordonez, which is painted on the lower side of the whale.
"I have a feeling my boat has struck down there in the depths, against a great thing. And nothing happens! Nothing .... silence... waves.... nothing happens? Or has everything happened, and we are standing now, quietly, in the new life?"

Each sculpture is drawn without template, and may vary slightly in contour or gesture and dimension. Dalton laminates white pine for the whale, and carves and shapes on the band saw and sander. The figure is poplar and is carved with a rotary carver. There are many layers of latex enamel, rubbed into each other, so the surface has a complex rich burnished quality. The figure is not fixed in place, but is easily inserted into 2 holes, and can be glued in.
