Wooden Sculpture

Created by Dona Dalton
This is a sculpture created in a mindset of possibility during a time of anticipating change. Painted on the underside of the whale is J.R. Ordonez's poem, "Oceans":
I have a feeling my boat has struck down there in the depths, against a great thing.
And nothing happens! Nothing .... silence... waves.... nothing happens?
Or has everything happened, and we are standing now, quietly, in the new life?

Each sculpture is drawn without template and will vary slightly in contour, gesture, and dimension. Dalton laminates white pine for the whale, then carves and shapes it with a band saw and sander. The figure is poplar and is carved with a rotary carver. There are many layers of latex enamel, rubbed into each other, so the surface has a complex, rich burnished quality.

The figure is not fixed in place, but is easily inserted into two holes. Can be glued in place.
