Lisa Battle

"My sculptures are explorations of form and movement. I capture gestures remembered from my lifelong love of dance, from walks along the seashore, from hiking desert canyons in the American southwest, and from new growth in the garden. My goal is to bring beauty and peace into our lives."

Lisa Battle creates a distinctive style of abstract sculptures and sculptural vessels. Her work explores organic form, line, and an undulating movement that evokes the sensual, curvilinear grace of natural landscapes shaped by erosion, as well as gestures that echo dance movements. She is inspired by the primal elements—earth, fire, water—which are also essential to the creation of her work.

Each sculpture and vessel is hand built using slabs and coils of stoneware clay. Firing in a Noborigama kiln creates rich surfaces with subtle variations of texture and color imparted by the movement of air and fire through the kiln. The result is both a visual and tactile experience in which the surface is inherently integrated with the form.

Lisa Battle began working with clay after completing a master's degree in psychology. She was immediately drawn to the meditative process of the work and the expressive possibilities of the material. She took classes in wheel throwing before finding her own way as a self-taught sculptor. Battle exhibits her work in galleries in Washington, D.C. and New York and at American Craft Council shows.
