Joan Skogsberg Sanders

Joan Skogsberg Sanders

"'Fresh Paint' is the name of my latest series of paintings and giclees. Although I am best known for my Moroccan series, in these new images, my focus is on dynamic color and abstract shapes, yet with identifiable reference points. I am reaching out to the viewer to create a mood of vital energy and excitement. "

Joan Skogsberg Sanders's Moroccan series recalls memories of past trips. She was—and clearly still is—intrigued by the rich, ancient past that is evident at every turn.

Her images are based on enigmatic reminiscences and evoke the strong religious thread that binds Morocco together. She also incorporates the country's traditions of mysticism: magic, spirits, "the evil eye." The paintings derive emotional content not only from Sanders's vivid recollections, but also through the reworking and combining of juxtaposed images.

Sanders studied art at the University of Oregon, The Art Center College of Design, and California State University, Long Beach. Her work has been shown across the USA and internationally.
