Cross Section is part of Altman's Desertscapes Series. The deserts are home to a variety of rocks and rock formations. Many of the semi precious gems found in the desert reveal themselves once they have been cracked open. Others like turquoise and quartz can be found in rock veins. The Cross Section sculpture is an abstract expression inspired the rock gems found in the desert. Slabs of colorful glass are nested in a field of amber and chartreuse frit and accented with sunset coral stringer. The sculpture comes with a metal stand.

Richard Altman

Richard Altman Designs
"For me, it's all about design. My pieces capitalize on the unique qualities of glass to transmit, reflect, and project light. The work is made so it appears to float on the wall as it interacts with surrounding surfaces through shadow, color, and design."

Contemporary style, soft colors, texture, and dramatic design are the hallmarks of Richard Altman's glass art. He creates stunning visual effects using a combination of glass fabrication techniques, including fusing, kiln carving, casting, torchworking, and sandblasting. A strong advocate for technology in the creative process, Altman uses computer-controlled heating cycles to achieve the precise texture finishes he desires.

Altman's art career spans 30 years and encompasses a variety of experiences, throughout which his interest in light and his creative use of technology and materials have remained constant. Originally from South Bend, Indiana, Altman studied biology and psychology at Indiana University before becoming an artist. He later received an MFA from Arizona State University in photography.
