Marc Carmen

"I aim to create stimulating glass vessels with a fresh take on modernist aesthetics."

Marc Carmen's blown glass works are inspired by the shapes of common utilitarian vessels such as bowls, bottles, and pitchers. He takes these forms and elaborates upon them, experimenting with their proportions and colors as well as the optical properties unique to glass. By the end of this process, the object is no longer functional, but rather, serves as an object of art.

Carmen strictly works solo, an anomaly in the world of glassblowing. He personally designed and built his own furnaces and studio equipment to suit his unique style of glassmaking. This allows him to carefully control every variable in the laborious process of transforming raw sand into a refined glass object.

Marc Carmen has studied glassblowing at the Penland School of Crafts in Penland, NC, the Corning Museum of Glass in Corning, NY, and Urbanglass in Brooklyn, NY. In 2012, Carmen started his own studio to independently continue studies in glass.
