Myth and Stone
"My work opens the pages of an old fairytale book. I draw that magic into my pieces with the intention of adding beauty to the world."

Meryl Smyth’s jewelry is a process of discovery—if Myth and Stone were a magical realm, each piece attempts to bring this world into focus a little more. Equal parts fairytale and antique treasure, Meryl’s work reflects the many ways she finds beauty in the world. She is driven by the excitement and deep satisfaction of turning a vision in her mind’s eye into a physical creation.

Each piece is meticulously hand carved from a block of wax to create a model to be cast in metal. Sometimes a piece begins with a defined sketch transferred directly onto the wax and other times a piece starts as a rough idea, taking shape as the carving progresses. It is fascinating what treasures can be found hiding in a block of wax! Meryl finishes each piece by hand in her studio.

For as long a she can remember, Meryl has been following her creative impulses whether through writing, sewing, or jewelry making–through a variety of techniques. A lifelong love of gems and crystals coupled with an innate desire to create made jewelry making an obvious choice. She has patched together a jewelry education over many years learning from various teachers across the country. Her home and studio is currently in Tucson, AZ.
